Cooleemee Mill Adaptive Reuse - Cooleemee, NC

Size: 650,000 Square Feet     |     Services: Architecture, Planning, Interiors     |
Project Description

The existing Cooleemee textile mill and town have been placed on the National Historic Register. It is one of very few intact mill towns left in rural North Carolina, and it boasts a rich industrial history. The mill was originally the heart of the town, but over the years, it has been relegated to predominantly warehouse and light manufacturing uses with little impact on the life of the community. Cooleemee has been undergoing a concerted effort to regain its identity and economic stability, and at the center of this is the adaptive reuse of the mill into mixed-use apartments, small localized retail and office spaces, community services, town hall, and a progressive senior living facility. We aimed to unite history with progress, to acknowledge and respect the historic and significant influence on the community while bringing the sense of progress and revival to what will define the restored center of town.
